Embracing New Beginnings in Education

This year, as we welcomed a fresh start, The Commons kicked things off with our first event of the year at BiggerStaff Brewing Company. Our focus was simple: to come together and relish the joy of each other's company. While we aimed to keep the agenda minimal and create a relaxed social gathering, it's in The Commons' nature to infuse even the most casual of events with a touch of structure and purpose. After warm reunions, our board president, Olivia Pedersen, graced us with a poignant reading. She shared "For a New Beginning" by John O'Donohue. The choice of this blessing was perfect.

As the words of O'Donohue's blessing flowed, an almost tangible resonance washed over us. Inspiration flowed, prompting us to reflect on what might be drawing to a close and what exciting new journeys lay ahead. Following Olivia's reading, we shared our interpretations of "New Beginnings," recounted stories of our fresh starts, and contemplated our approaches to embracing new beginnings. We heard about moving to new cities, finishing an unbelievably long home renovation, starting a new school, a new position, a new subject, or even a new career.  In that moment, unity prevailed. It was a poignant reminder of life's ever-changing nature and the profound beauty of welcoming new beginnings.

The experience reminded me of one of the many things that makes education so unique. In the teaching world, we have the incredible privilege of experiencing a new beginning every year. With the start of each school year, we're granted a clean slate and the opportunity to craft something beautiful. It's a constant cycle of renewal that keeps us on our toes and challenges us to grow both as educators and individuals.

The experience also reminded me of how important it is to reflect on life. Reflecting on these new beginnings allows us to appreciate the present moment, the journey that has brought us here, and the future that is still unknown. We gain a sense of perspective that can ground us in the here and now. It's a reminder that every ending is a new beginning, and every beginning is an opportunity for growth. As educators, this practice can help us stay resilient, creative, and empathetic in the face of the ever-changing landscape of education. So, let's celebrate these new beginnings in our classrooms and lives, for they hold the key to our continued growth and evolution.
